Reels, Stories or a video in the listing? Which format when

Portrait, landscape or square. How to choose a video's format, length and text based on where people will see it, and why you don't have to pick just one.

One set of photos, three formats: portrait, landscape and square.

The same video can work brilliantly in one place and get lost in another. On a phone in Reels, viewers want the whole screen; on a property portal the video plays in a landscape window; and in a regular post, square wins. So don't pick the format based on what you like, but on where the video will play.

Formats at a glance

FormatWhere to use itWhat to keep in mind
9:16 portraitReels, Stories, TikTokFills the whole screen. Keep the important things in the middle; the app's buttons cover the edges.
16:9 landscapeProperty portals, websites, YouTubeShows the most space. Suits a longer, calmer tour.
1:1 squareFacebook and Instagram postsA compromise for the feed. Takes up less height than 9:16.

How long should the video be?

  • Reels and Stories: short and snappy, around 15 to 20 seconds. Viewers decide within the first few seconds.
  • Social media post: around 20 seconds, at a balanced pace.
  • Listing and website: a calmer tour of around 30 seconds. Here the video is watched by someone who is already interested in the property.

What to do with landscape photos in a portrait video

Most property photos are landscape. In a 9:16 video you have two options:

  • Crop: the photo fills the whole screen but loses its sides. Works when the main subject is in the centre.
  • Blurred background: the photo stays whole and a blurred copy of it fills the empty space above and below. Works for wide rooms and exteriors.

In Stagendo you set the composition for each clip separately, so you can combine both options in one video.

Text in the video

Lots of people watch videos with the sound off. A short caption with the key details, such as “2-bed flat · Prague 2”, gets the essentials across without a voiceover. Keep it brief, legible and away from the edges, where captions and buttons cover it in Reels. Stagendo can add the text as appearing text right in the shot.

One format or all of them?

Ideally you have a video for every place you promote the property: portrait for social media, landscape for the listing. If each one is edited by hand, that means extra work. In Stagendo you simply create the video again in a different format from the same photos and clips. The proposed cut is free; you only pay for newly created clips.

Summary

  • Reels and Stories: 9:16, short and snappy.
  • Listing and website: 16:9, a calmer tour.
  • Landscape photos in a portrait video: crop or blurred background.
  • A short caption with the key details helps when viewers have the sound off.
